MacReady looks on in horror as Copper drops to the floor.
Norris' splayed body begins to shake, several tenacles emerge and squirm rapidly from the chest cavity, streams of yellowish fluid sprays outward. They watch on in stunned horror as The Thing that was Norris begins to change, to spread awkwardly on the slab. Its clothes tearing. A shoe splits in half and falls to the floor, exposing the beginnings of a talon.
MacReady readies his flamethrower as the men hurriedly exit the room.
A bizarre monstrosity erupts from Norris' chest and attaches itself to the ceiling using insect like appendages.
MacReady unloads with a stream of flame. The body writhes in pain, belching and hissing. It struggles, a black and yellow substance rips through its trousers and squirts to the floor.
The head of Norris on the table screaming an unearthly shrill, the neck begins to stretch. The slab catches fire.
MacReady continues the onslaught, the abomination of twisted flesh is completely engulfed in flames.
Unnoticed, the Norris head now begins to rip away from the body. Long green tendons snap, shooting squirts of yellow, black, and green colored fluids.
The head slowly drops over the edge of the slab, it's alien scream continues.
MacReady ignites one more dose of inferno for good measure. The entire area of the slab is in flames.
The head, now detached and on the floor, ejects a long tongue-like tentacle and latches it onto a nearby chair.
The other men are now at the entrance standing by with fire extinguishers. MacReady holds them off, he wants to be sure it is dead.
MACREADY: Back! . . . Wait!
GARRY: The fire, MacReady! We need to . . .
MACREADY: Just wait!
Meanwhile, the head is slowly pulling itself along to secure a hiding place.
MacReady finally gives them the go ahead.
MACREADY: Allright, go!
Extinguishers are put to work. MacReady watches the smoking particles of ooze in fascination, as they twitch and mew on the floor.
The head now underneath the desk and unseen, begins a surreal transformation. A crackling sound is heard from arachnid-like legs sprouting from the side of the head and two antennae-like eyes extend from the top.
MACREADY: Windows! Get in here!
Within seconds the fire is out. MacReady continues to observe the small particles. Their tiny squeals abating into silence.
The "spiderhead" making subdued hissing sounds, pokes out from the desk and sees the men are looking the other way. It scrambles for the exit.
The men stand around in awe as they look upon The Thing that was once Norris. The spiderhead makes it to the exit without being seen.
But Palmer turns and notices the ghastly mutation. The others turn also.
PALMER: You gotta be fuckin' kidding!
With a savage look in his eyes, MacReady ignites the flamethrower, a stream of flames smother the creature. It's long dying wails crescendo to a high pitch shrill.
