Peterson climbs up the field pipe ladder and looks in.
PETERSON: Where does this thing go?
SMITTY (checking a map): According to this, that field pipe runs into a main line drain that isn't finished yet. Still under construction.
Peterson returns to the jeep and loads up the flamethrower.
PETERSON: Give me a hand here, will ya'. . . . Tell them where I'm going.
SMITTY: Yea. . . . (radio transmit) Peterson is going into the connecting feeder to Drain 267. We heard what may be the kids.
Mrs. Lodge is listening intently to Smitty's update.
SMITTY (o.s.): Repeat, we heard what may be the kids. Stand by.
PETERSON: You said there's construction down there, didn't you?
SMITTY: Yea.
PETERSON: Well call the line and if there's work lights down there, tell them to turn them on.
SMITTY: Right. (radio transmit) My map shows a portion of Drain 267 is unfinished, with construction postponed for the last sixty days. They may have left work lights installed. If so, get them turned on, stand by.
Peterson crawls through the field pipe, the tapping grows louder.
He calls out to the kids.
PETERSON: Mike! Jerry! Are you there?
JERRY: Yes, we're here!
PETERSON: Smitty, they're alive!
SMITTY (radio transmit): They're alive. Tell Mrs. Lodge her boys are alive.
Mrs. Lodge is overwhelmed by the news.
