Anakin: Of course not me.

Padmé: But someone.

Anakin: Someone wise.

Padmé: Sounds an awful lot like a dictatorship to me.

A mischievious little grin creeps across his face.

Anakin: Well, if it works.

Padmé stares at Anakin. He looks back at her, straight-faced, but can't hold back a smile.

Padmé (chuckles): You're making fun of me.

Anakin (sarcastic): No, I'd be much too frightened to tease a Senator.

Moments later, Anakin is riding on the back of a Shaak. The Shaak bucks, and Anakin falls off. The creature tramples over the fallen Jedi. Anakin lies still. Padmé runs to where Anakin is face down in the grass. She turns him over, to reveal him laughing mischievously. She yelps in mock fury and takes a swing at him. They roll over, tumbling in the grass.

Tipoca City - Rain lashes the city. Below, mightly waves pound the stilts, breaking almost to the height of the platforms.

Corridor - Taun We conducts Obi-Wan to the door of Jango Fett's apartment. Taun We presses a button and a muted bell rings. The door opens, a ten-year-old boy, Boba Fett, looks at them. He is identical to the boys in the classroom.

Taun We: Boba, is your father here?

Boba Fett: Yep.

Taun We: May we see him?

Boba: Sure.

A brief pause, then Boba leads them inside.

Boba: Dad, Taun We's here.

As thunder rumbles outside, Jango Fett comes in from the bedroom. He is unshaven and mean looking, his face pitted with scars of old wounds.

Taun We: Jango, welcome back. Was your trip productive?

Jango Fett: Fairly.

Taun We: This is Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. He's come to check on our progress.

Jango Fett's eyes fix on Obi-Wan coldly.

Obi-Wan: Your clones are very impressive. You must be very proud.

Jango: I'm just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe.

Obi-Wan: Ever made your way as far into the interior as Coruscant?

Jango: Once or twice.

Obi-Wan: Recently?

Jango eyes Obi-Wan with suspicion. Obi-Wan and Jango Fett size each other up. Boba Fett studies both of them.

Jango: Possibly.

Obi-Wan: Then you must know Master Sifo-Dyas.

Obi-Wan eyes the half-open bedroom door, through which a couple of pieces of body armor can be seen on the floor. Jango Fett registers Obi-Wan's look. Jango moves around him to redirect the Jedi's view.

Jango: Boba, rood eht so-heeck. [Boba, close the door.]

Boba moves to close the bedroom door.

Jango: Master who?

Obi-Wan: Sifo-Dyas. Is he not the Jedi who hired you for this job?

Jango: Never heard of him. I was recuited by a man called Tyranus on one of the moons of Bogden.

Obi-Wan: Curious.

Jango: Do you like your army?

Obi-Wan: I look forward to seeing them in action.

Jango: They'll do their job well, I'll guarantee that.

Obi-Wan: Thank you for your time, Jango.

Jango: Always a pleasure to meet a Jedi.

Obi-Wan glares at Jango and makes his way to the exit as the thunder continues to rumble. Jango Fett turns to his son. He is deep in thought.

Boba: What is it, Dad?

Jango: Pack your things. We're leaving.

Naboo lake retreat, dining room - Nandi places dessert on the table. The dessert is some kind of fruit.

Anakin: And when I got to them, we went into aggressive negotions. (to Nandi) Thank you.

Padmé: Aggressive negotiations? What's that?

Anakin: Well, negotiations with a lightsaber.

They both laugh. Padmé picks up her fork and goes to spear a piece, but it moves. She looks up at Anakin. Anakin subtly moves his hand and it lifts up the fruit and it floats to him.

Anakin: If Master Obi-Wan caught me doing this, he'd be very grumpy.

Anakin cuts the fruit and floats a piece back to Padmé. She spears it with her fork and takes bite, smiling.

Fireplace alcove - A fire blazes in the open hearth. Anakin and Padmé are sitting near it. Silence. The logs flame in the hearth.

Anakin: From the moment I met you, all those years ago, not a day has gone by when I haven't thought of you. And now that I'm with you again, I'm in agony. The closer I get to you, the worse it gets. The thought of not being with you, I can't breathe. I'm haunted by the kiss that you should never have given me. My heart is beating, hoping that kiss will not become a scar. You are in my very soul, tormenting me. What can I do? I will do anything you ask. . . . . If you are suffering as much as I am, please, tell me.

Padmé: I can't. We can't. It's just not possible.

Anakin: Anything's possible, Padmé. Listen to me.

Padmé: No, you listen. We live in a real world. Come back to it. You're studying to become a Jedi. I'm a Senator. If you follow your thoughts through to conclusion, it'll take us to a place we cannot go . . . regardless of the way we feel about each other.

Anakin: Then you do feel something.

Padmé: I will not let you give up your your future for me.

Anakin: You are asking me to be rational. That is something I know I cannot do. Believe me, I wish I could just wish away my feelings, but I can't.

Padmé: I will not give into this.

Anakin: Well you know, it wouldn't have to be that way. We could keep it a secret.

Padmé: We'd be living a lie, one we couldn't keep even if we wanted to. I couldn't do that. Could you, Anakin? Could you live like that?

Anakin: No, you're right. It would destroy us.

Tipoca City - The waves crash against the water city as the storm continues. In the corridor, Obi-Wan walks with Taun We towards the entrance.

Lama Su: Tell your Council the first battalions are ready. And remind them, if they need more troops, it will take more time to grow them.

Obi-Wan: I won't forget, and thank you.

Landing platform - Obi-Wan turns to see that Taun We has left, then addresses R4 D17, Obi-Wan's Astro-Droid, who is embedded in Obi-Wan's Starfighter.

Obi-Wan: R4! Scramble code five to Coruscant, care of the old folks' home!

R4 beeps and whistles. A small satellite dish pops out and unfolds, establishing a connection to Yoda and Windu.

Jedi Temple, living quarters - Yoda and Mace Windu listen as a hologram of Obi-Wan stands between them broadcasting the message. The signal is very weak, the image fades in and out.

Obi-Wan (transmit): I have successfully made contact with the prime minister of Kamino. They are using a bounty hunter named Jango Fett to create a clone army. I have a strong feeling that this bounty hunter is the assassin we're looking for.

Mace: Do you think these cloners are involved in the plot to assassinate Senator Amidala?

Obi-Wan (transmit): No, Master. There appears to be no motive.

Yoda: Do not assume anything, Obi-Wan. Clear your mind must be if you are to discover the real villains behind this plot.

Obi-Wan (transmit): Yes, Master. They say Maste Sifo-Dyas placed an order for a clone army at the request of the senate almost ten years ago. I've never heard of a Jedi called Sido-Dyas, have you, Master?

Yoda Mace Windu give each other a look.

Obi-Wan (transmit): I was under the impression he was killed before that. Did the council ever authorize the creation of a clone army?

Mace: No. Whoever placed that order did not have the authorization of the Jedi Council.

Yoda: Bring him here. Question him we will.

Obi-Wan (transmit): Yes, Master. I will report back when I have him.

The hologram switches off, and Obi-Wan fades away.

Yoda: Blind we are if creation of this army we could not see.

Mace (sights): I think it is time we informed the senate that our ability to use the Force has diminished.

Yoda: Only the dark lord of the Sith knows of our weakness. If informed the senate is, multiply our adversaries will.

Naboo lake retreat, Anakin's bedroom - Anakin moves restlessly in his sleep. He mutters to himself. Sweat forms on his forehead. He turns violently. He cries out.

Anakin: No...No...No...Mom!...Don't, no!

Naboo lake retreat, lodge - Anakin is on the balcony overlooking the gardens. After a moment, Padmé comes onto the balcony behind him. She sees he is meditating and turns to go.

Anakin (eyes closed): Don't go.

Padmé: I don't want to disturb you.

Anakin: Your presence is soothing.

Padmé: You had another nightmare last night.

Anakin: Jedi don't have nightmares.

Padmé: I heard you.

Anakin's opens his eyes and looks at her.

Anakin: I saw my mother. She's suffering, Padmé. I saw her as clearly as I see you now. (deep sigh) She is in pain. I know I'm disobeying my mandate to protect you, Senator, but I have to go. I have to help her.

Padmé: I'll go with you.

Anakin: I'm sorry. I don't have a choice.

Tipoca City, Kamino landing platform (rainstorm) - Jango Fett and his son, Boba are hauling gear into the ship. Jango is wearing his armour and rocket pack.

Boba Fett: Dad! Look!

Jango turns to see Obi-Wan charging out of the tower toward him. As he runs, Obi-Wan draws his lightsaber from his belt. It flashes on. Jango Fett draws his gun and fires at the charging Jedi.

Obi-Wan deflects the blast and swings at Jango Fett. The bounty hunter rockets up, landing on a tall column. In the cockpit, Boba powers up the ship, grabs the controls of a laser gun and swings it to aim at Obi-Wan. Jango fires a rocket from his backpack, the blast knocks Obi-Wan back and he loses his grip on his lightsaber. The lightsaber skids across the wet surface of the landing platform. In the cockpit, Boba fires. This second blast knocks the Jedi back further.

The moment Obi-Wan rises, Jango is quickly swooping down on him, but the Jedi leaps and kicks him away in mid-air. Jango loses his pistol and before he gets a chance to stand, Obi-Wan makes a sudden attack, kicking Jango, who deflects the blows. In the cockpit, each time Boba Fett is ready to fire, Jango blocks his view of Obi-Wan. They each exchange more blows.

Obi-wan turns to call for his lightsaber using the Force, but Jango fires a thin wire from his wrist pack, entangling the Jedi. Jango jets off, dragging Obi-Wan with him across the platform. The Jedi regains a foothold and wraps the wire around a column. This sends Jango crashing to the platform. This dislodges his rocket backpack. It spins off out of control and explodes into a structure.

Jango sees his pistol and leaps for it. He fires, but Obi-Wan is quickly right on him and kicks him off the platform. However, still attached to the bounty hunter with the wire, Obi-Wan is yanked down also as they both go sliding off the slope of the platform. Jango activates a blade from his wristpack, digging it into the metal to stop his fall. Jango manages to hook himself into the metal while the Jedi slides by him. Obi-Wan is now hanging over the edge held by the wire, with the raging ocean below him. Jango releases the wire, allowing Obi-Wan to fall.

The Jedi uses the wire to lasso a column, saving him from falling into the crashing waves. Jango peers over the edge and cannot see him, assuming Obi-Wan plummeted into the ocean. He climbs his way back up while Obi-Wan swings himself onto a platform and uses the Force to open the sliding door. The Jedi makes it back to Jango's ship, but it's too late. He watches it take off, Boba at the controls as his father races up the ship ramp. Obi-Wan throws a tracking device onto his ship, the device activates as the ship rockets up into the stormy sky.
