Production

The film began life as a preliminary script written by Travis Milloy in the late-1990s. The story was originally set on a prison ship named Pandorum, transporting thousands of Earth's deadliest prisoners to another planet; the cannibal hunters were the end result of the prisoners' degeneration.

The characters played by Antje Traue and Cung Le were inmates. Ben Foster's character was a non-prisoner who did not trust anyone.

Believing no studio would want to make the film, Milloy thought about making it as a low-budget film shot on video in an abandoned paper mill with unknown actors.

However, it attracted the attention of filmmaker Paul W. S. Anderson and Jeremy Bolt, and they gave it to Impact Pictures, who green-lit it. The producers gave the script to director Christian Alvart who was struck by the similarities to his own screenplay titled No Where.

His dramatic story was about four astronauts aboard a settlers' ship who suffer from amnesia. Alvart decided that they should weld the two screenplays together, and the producers and Milloy agreed.

With the ship now changed to a settler's ship, the use of the word "Pandorum" was changed from the name of the ship to a type of mental illness caused by sustained deep space travel.

Pandorum was announced in May 2008 with Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster in lead roles. Christian Alvart was attached to direct the film, based on a script by Travis Milloy.

The movie was financed by Constantin Film through a joint venture deal with subsidiary Impact Pictures.

The partnership helped fund the $40 million production. Constantin drew subsidies from Germany's Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg (MBB) regional film fund, the German Federal Film Board (FFA) and the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF).

The German Federal Film Fund provided $6 million to the production, the fund's second-largest 2008 payout after $7.5 million for Ninja Assassin. Filming took place at Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam in August 2008.

After the creature leaves, Bower tells Payton that something not human is on-board the ship. Bower gets a childhood flashback remembering Tanis being discovered.

He recalls watching it on television with his family being fascinated with the idea of sending people up there.

Bower then remembers his wife and that families of the crew were allowed to travel on the ship. Bower becomes desperate to find her before the creatures do. He also remembers that Payton has a wife as well.

Payton tries to convince him to continue making his way to the reactor. If Bower can fix it, the power will come back on for the ship and they can implement security measures. Bower looks around and finds a security room. He finds an anti-riot gun and straps it to his arm.

He goes into the corridors again and sees a hanged man. He thinks that he's going crazy since it looks like the same hanged man from before.

However, upon closer inspection he finds that the man is different (he's still alive and in one piece). Bower cuts him down and is introduced to Shepard (Norman Reedus). Shepard is part of another group and has been by himself for a long time. Bower says that his commanding officer want's to know what's happening. Shepard says that there's no commanding officer and covers himself in oil to cover his scent from the creatures.

He tries to leave but sees blue lights coming towards them. The creatures chase Bower and Shepard through the ship. The creatures are fast and have sharp weapons. Running fast through the corridors, Bower tries to leap over a large opening, but doesn't quite make it.

He falls into a a grated well. The creatures eventually string Shepard back up and eat him. Bower tries to shoot the creatures, but his shot is blocked by a glass barrier.

The creatures see him and chase after him. Bower frantically races through the compartments, his ankle catches a trip wire and he falls far into a large, deep shaft. He comes to a stop with the wire suspending him upside down, dropping the anti-riot gun.

Hanging onto nearby tubes, he searches with his flashlight. Suddenly the creatures arrive and start pulling him up by the wire.

As Bower struggles, Manh (Cung Le) charges in from a nearby balcony, swinging from a pipe, he cuts the wire. Bower falls onto the balcony floor. Manh picks him up and shoves him into the balcony enlcosure. Bower falls onto the enclosure floor and Manh activates a lever to close the balcony door.

Bower thanks him but can't understand Manh's language but still manages to communicate that he's part of the crew. He sees Manh's tattoo and sees that he's part of the agriculture crew. He tells him that he's going to start up the reactor and tells Manh to stay put.

Meanwhile, Payton starts to get a bloody nose and gets increasingly scared that he can't talk to Bower.

Bower finds a large cargo container that acts as a living quarters. He sees that there are several other containers as well and food.

He opens the container and sees he is at a great height where hundreds of containers are stacked. Suddenly Nadi comes swinging in from above the container and kicks her feet into his chest. Bower falls back onto the container floor.

Bower and Nadia fight violently, but she charges him, knocking him out of the container entrance. Bowers falls several feet down the stack containers open area. Nadia shows remorse asking him if he is okay, then Manh pops up and defends Bower. As Nadia and Manh fight, Bower fires off a shot into the air.

He tells them that he understands that its felt like "every man for himself" and she wants to survive, but solidarity is the far more effective survival strategy. She doesn't trust him at first and puts a knife to his neck when he touches her.

But she eventually agrees after finding out he could fly the ship and land it. Bower tells Nadia that they need to start the reactor or else they'll lose everything.

Nadia says that no one has ever come back from the reactor room. However, since she knows the way, she'll lead him to it. They come across a hallway and find themselves surrounded by creatures.

A power surge shakes the ship, allowing Nadia to activate a door open. They barely make it inside and seal the door.

Nadia has been living in and protecting this room which is an an Embryonic chamber holding livestock and wildlife re-population as it holds the world they are going to live in, stating that the ship is a Noah's Ark.

She is revealed to be a former biologist from Germany who spent seven years working for the Brandenburg Institute genetic sampling team collecting and readying earth's biosphere for the trip to Tanis.

Her motive for enlisting on the mission was because she was a workaholic and it didn't feel right handing off the genetic samples, so she volunteered to go along with it. She broods about how she can remember the vaults and its systems but she can't remember where she grew up or her brother's name.

She also reveals that she has a quirk for eating grasshoppers, stating that it is good for protein and offers Bower some. He accepts and they eat together which disgusts Mahn.

After a while, Nadia leads the team through a part of the ship that holds civilian pods. Bower notices that the majority of the pods are empty. Nadia tells him that it's the creatures hunting ground and tells them to hurry. Bower wonders if his wife is there, but Nadia tells him that the families of the crew are held in another area of the ship. Mahn gets distracted by something and holds his spear up. Bower tells him to move but he doesn't, knowing something is following them.

Nadia says they should leave him behind but Bower objects at first but he has no choice but to keep moving. As they whisper, Bower steps on a floor panel grating. It makes creaking noises and with a crack it gives ways, Bower falls and disappears.

Nadia searches for him, but also becomes a victim of a collapsing floor panel. Bower lights up a glow stick and they both see that they've fallen into a massive pit of bones and gore.
