Mrs. Carmody is spared by one of the insects when she prays. She starts preaching and quickly gains followers among the distraught survivors.
After the ordeal, David grabs Billy to comfort him. They all looked shell shocked as others try to board up the broken window. A woman speaks up that Carmody was right, she foresaw this. Just outside the store, something grabs the lower torso of the biker and hauls it off. David visits Joe Eagleton (Jackson Hurst), the burn victim, who's brother, Bobby (Brandon O'Dell), is by his side. Joe is in so much pain, he begs them for a mercy killing.
Amanda calls to Hattie, but she doesn't respond. She sees an empty prescription container just next to Hattie's hand, an apparent suicide. Joe's suffering sets David on the mission to get antibiotics and pain killers at the pharmacy. David pitches to the group - Ollie, Amanda, Bud, Dan, and others that they should try to get to his Land Cruiser and head away from the mist, but the group is not convinced that's the best plan.
David: Want another reason to get the hell out of here? I'll give you the best one: her. Mrs. Carmody. Our very own Jim Jones. I'd like to leave before people start drinking the Kool-Aid.
David is worried that once Carmody recruits enough followers, she will look to others as the sacrificial blood. Dan agrees . . .
Amanda: You don't have much faith in humanity, do you?
Dan: None whatsoever.
Amanda: I can't accept that. People are basically good; decent. My god, David, we're a civilized society.
David: Sure, as long as the machines are working and you can dial 911. But you take those things away, you throw people in the dark, you scare the shit out of them - no more rules.
Dan: You scare people badly enough, you can get 'em to do anything They'll turn to whoever promises a solution.
Ollie: As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill one another. Why do you think we invented politics and religion?
David explains to Billy about going to Pharmacy, but Billy gets upset and begs him to not go. David comforts him and promises he will come back, leaving Billy in Amanda's hands. As they are about to leave, Carmody wastes no time in getting in their face. She claims that they will only wind up bring the creatures back to them and she starts in with wrath of God lecturing. Irene can't take it any more and hurls a can of peas at Mrs. Carmody, striking her on the head.
Irene: Shut up, you miserable buzzard! Stoning people who piss you off is perfectly okay. They do it in the Bible, don't they? And I got lots of peas!
Carmody, furious and wanting to tear at Irene, is held back by others. Private Jessep volunteers to join David's group. No one else volunteers, including Jim. Irene sees to it that he does . . .
Irene: Jim Grondin. I had you in school, didn't I?
Jim: Yes, ma'am. Me and my sister Pauline.
Irene: Pair of underachievers. . . . After you, Jim.
David and his volunteers now include Ollie, Irene, Jessep, Jim, Dan, Mike, and Bobby. They head to the pharmacy, spotlights and weapons ready. The pharmacy appears to be empty, they hastily grab the medical supplies they need, always keeping a watchful eye. They become alarmed when they hear a strange sound.
To their shock they find people ensnared in webs. Suddenly an arm reaches out and grabs Jim, who starts screaming hysterically. They soon discover it's the MP who had entered the grocery store early on. The MP gasps that the mist was "their fault."
They try to free him from the web. His skin is covered with boils-like lumps or blisters. Even his chest is covered with them. The MP starts convulsing and insect creatures start erupting from the blisters.
Joe stumbles back and turns, he's now up close to a much larger menacing creature. Jim can only stand there frozen and screams. Ollie pulls him away to get a clear shot and blasts the creature with his gun. Dozens of otherworldly spider-like monsters attack, shooting a acid/corrosive web at them. They try to fend them off but there are too many of them. A web hits Bobby and burns his leg to a bloody mess.
