David now has a tentacle close to his face, it's black talons about to strike. David is forced to let go of Norm. Now completely wrapped up by tentacles, Norm is whisked away into the mist, leaving only the sounds of his agonizing screams.
David manages to active the door-close switch. As the metal door rolls down, the huge tentacle tries to snake its way back out. David grabs the axe and hacks off the tip of the tentacle. Ollie watches in disbelief. David is furious and stares at Jim . . .
Jim: How was I supposed to know what you meant? You should've said what you meant better!
David hauls off and belts Jim in the face, beating him repeatedly until Ollie steps in to break it up.
David: You got that kid killed, and I got his fucking blood on me!
Myron: Hey man, we didn't twist his arm.
David: He's a fucking kid. He's supposed to be stupid. What's your excuse?
Ollie: We have to tell them. The people in the market. We have to stop them from going outside.
David: They won't believe us.
Ollie: They have to.
David: I'm not sure I believe it, and I was here. What we saw was impossible. You know that, don't you? What do we say? How do we... convince them? Ollie, what the hell were those tentacles even attached to?
Ollie: We gotta discuss how we're going to stop that thing from getting in here.
Myron: What do you mean getting in? We shut the loading door.
Ollie: Yeah, but the entire front of the store is plate glass.
David explains to Norton what happened in the dock, the other men confirm his story. Norton doesn't believe their claims, and plans to go get help with several others. Ollie, with beer in hand, chimes in and tells the crowd that has gathered around them that David is telling the truth.
Bud: For Christ's sake, Ollie. You want me to report you? You want to lose your job? Look, I'm gonna be taking down names, starting with you. And I am prepared to file a police report.
Ollie: Fine, write down your names.
Bud: I will.
Ollie: And in the mean time, shut the fuck up and listen.
Carmody takes this all in as David explains to the crowd what happened in the dock and his plan to escape. Brent and Bud are skeptical, so David challenges Bud to go see for himself.
At the dock, Bud sees for himself . . . the tentacle comes to life and then disintegrates, leaving a puddle of thick slime.
Bud returns to the store and addresses the crowd . . .
Bud: It appears we may have a problem of some magnitude.
Moments later, the crowd chips in to reinforce the front windows with stacks of pet food.
Meanwhile, Carmody is in a bathroom stall making a sacrificial prayer. Amanda comes in as Carmody exits the stall.
Amanda: I just want you to know that it's okay... being scared. And, well, if you need a friend, someone to talk to . . .
Carmody: I have a friend. God, up above. I talk to him everyday. Don't you condescend me.
Amanda: I'm sorry?
Carmody: Not ever. You don't mock me.
Amanda: That's not what I was doing.
Carmody: I'll tell you what. The day I need a friend like you, I'll just have myself a little squat and shit one out.
Brent continues his sales pitch to his followers that stacking dog food is a poor plan and they should look for rescue. David interrupts that he's just inciting the crowd unnecessarily.
Ollie: Leave it alone, David. You can't convince some people there's a fire even when their hair is burning. Denial is a powerful thing.
Carmody breaks out her bible and continues her armegeddon, fire and brimstone lecture.
Dan: What are you saying? What are you proposing?
Carmody: That we all prepare... to meet our maker...
Jim [interrupting her]: Oh, prepare to meet shit! Lady, your tongue must be hung in the middle so that it can waggle at both ends.
Carmody: The end of times has come. Not in flames, but in mist.
Jim: Come here. How about if your ass prepares to meet my size ten work boot! How about that?
