EXTINCT GREAT HOUSE TYRELL OF HIGHGARDEN IN THE REACH

House Tyrell of Highgarden was one of the Great Houses of Westeros. Their words were, "Growing Strong". It ruled over the Reach, a vast, fertile, and heavily-populated region of southwestern Westeros, from their castle-seat, Highgarden. Formerly led by Lord Mace Tyrell, his mother, the indomitable Olenna Tyrell, stood as the last known member of the house.

Under Lady Olenna, House Tyrell had aligned itself with House Targaryen in opposition against Queen Cersei I. House Tarly betrayed House Tyrell and joined Jaime Lannister's forces in an assault on Highgarden. Their castle was taken quickly and Olenna is forced to drink poison. Olenna's death extinguished the main branch of House Tyrell, losing their ancestral seat of Highgarden.

Olenna Tyrell is the widow of Lord Luthor Tyrell and the mother of Mace Tyrell, the former Lord of Highgarden, Warden of the South, Lord Paramount of the Reach, and head of House Tyrell. She is the grandmother of his children Loras and Margaery. She was born into House Redwyne, one of the most prominent and powerful vassals of House Tyrell. In her youth, Olenna Redwyne was engaged to a member of House Targaryen, as it was "all the rage" at the time; it was her sister Viola to whom Luthor Tyrell was expected to marry.

Mace Tyrell is the Lord of Highgarden and head of House Tyrell. He is the Lord Paramount of the Reach and Warden of the South. Mace is not considered a great strategist or general himself. On the other hand, he has shown good judgment in delegating such tasks to trusted, skilled subordinates, such as the famous general Randyll Tarly, who often commands Mace's forces in battle. Mace is an amiable fellow well-liked by most of his bannermen, as well a loving husband and father. Mace has one son, Loras, and a daughter, Margaery.

Margaery is the only daughter of Alerie and Mace Tyrell. She was raised in privilege in the family seat and regional capital of Highgarden. She is close to her brother, Ser Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers. She is also close to her handmaidens, Sera Durwell and Mira Forrester, who followed her to King's Landing from Highgarden. She is said to be as beautiful as she is clever. Margaery became Queen Consort through her marriage to King Joffrey Baratheon, and later his younger brother Tommen Baratheon following Joffrey's death.

Ser Loras Tyrell is the son of Alerie Mace Tyrell. Loras is the heir to Highgarden and the Tyrell lands and titles, and this status, along with his skills and good looks, makes him possibly the most sought-after bachelor in all of Westeros. Loras is a skilled knight famed for his many tournament victories, which make him popular with the smallfolk and with young women in particular. Loras is one of the few knights who has on rare occasion managed to defeat the formidable Jaime Lannister in a joust. He is commonly known as the "Knight of the Flowers".

House Tyrell began as a cadet branch of House Gardener, the ancient Kings of the Reach. The Tyrells became senior servants of the main Gardener line, serving for centuries as castellans of the royal castle at Highgarden. Over time they rose to prominence as one of the strongest noble Houses in the Reach, and even intermarried with the royal line - though so did many other powerful Houses from the Reach. Throughout history, House Tyrell has played by the strategy of following the sure path, siding with whoever is most likely to win in any conflict.

During the Targaryen Conquest, the Tyrells surrendered Highgarden to the invading forces of Aegon the Conqueror, and in return they were elevated as the new Lords Paramount of the Reach. During Robert's Rebellion, House Tyrell remained loyal to House Targaryen, as Robert Baratheon was a rebel unlikely to win, and the Tyrells owed their rule of the Reach to the Targaryens. Over time, House Tyrell became well known for its vast army and bountiful resources.
