FORMER GREAT HOUSE TULLY OF RIVERRUN

House Tully was one of the Great Houses of Westeros. Their lands are to the west of the continent. Their seat is Riverrun, a castle at the confluence of the Red Fork of the Trident with the Tumblestone. Their house words are "Family, Duty, Honor." House Tully rose to prominence during the Wars of Conquest. Lord Edmyn Tully rebelled against the King of the Isles and the Riverlands, Harren the Black, to support the invading House Targaryen, elevating the Tullys to Lords Paramount of the Riverlands.

Hoster was the head of House Tully and the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Hoster married Lady Minisa of House Whent. They have three children, two daughters Catelyn and Lysa and a son, Edmure. In recent years Hoster had become old and frail, losing a great deal of weight. By the beginning of the War of the Five Kings, Hoster had been bedridden for a considerable amount of time from a prolonged illness, and only semi-coherent. His son and heir Edmure took over the day-to-day rule of Riverrun, and Hoster's other duties as overlord of the Riverlands.

Brynden "black fish" Tully is the younger brother of Hoster Tully, Lord of Riverrun and head of House Tully, and the uncle of Catelyn Stark, Edmure Tully, and Lysa Arryn. Brynden is a respected knight and formidable battle commander. Hoster attempted to contract arranged marriage-alliances for Brynden over the years, many of them very promising matches, but Brynden turned them all down, which led to constant bickering between the two brothers. Despite his disagreements with his brother over his refusal to marry, Brynden is very devoted to his family.

Ser Edmure is the son and heir of Lord Hoster Tully. Edmure is the new head of House Tully and thus has recently become the Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Riverlands. Edmure's mother Minisa Tully died in childbirth during his early childhood. He has two elder sisters Catelyn and Lysa. He was also raised with his father's ward, Petyr Baelish.

At the onset of the War of the Five Kings, House Tully came under attack by House Lannister and lent its support for House Stark when they came to their aid in the liberation of the Riverlands. House Tully has since been formally stripped of lands and titles for rebellion against the Iron Throne, with Lord Edmure a captive of House Frey following the Red Wedding. Later, Ser Brynden Tully gathered the remaining Tully forces and reclaimed Riverrun from the Freys, reopening conflict between the Tullys and the Iron Throne.

The Freys lay siege to Riverrun, and were later assisted by the Lannisters on the orders of King Tommen I. Ser Jaime Lannister managed to end the siege by convincing Edmure Tully to command the garrison to lay down their weapons in return for clemency and protection. Brynden was killed during a final stand with Lannister and Frey forces while Edmure was returned to the Freys as a prisoner.

VASSAL HOUSES SWORN TO FORMER GREAT HOUSE TULLY

HOUSE BRACKEN of Stone Hedge's lands are in the heart of the Riverlands, located along the banks of the Red Fork of the Trident. Their seat is known as Stone Hedge. The Brackens hold an ancient grudge against their neighbors, the Blackwoods of Raventree Hall. The two houses, which hold the blood of the First Men in their veins and merged with the invading Andals rather than being completely conquered by them, competed for the throne of the Riverlands when it was an independent kingdom. The enmity and competition continues to this day and was increased when House Bracken converted to the Faith of the Seven.

HOUSE WHENT of Harrenhal's lands are along the north shore of Gods Eye, which they rule from the huge and formidable castle of Harrenhal. Their motto is not known. The Whents were granted Harrenhal after the extinction of House Lothston. Their heraldry is apparently derived from the previous holders of Harrenhal, as House Lothston's heraldry was a single black bat over a field diagonally divided between gold and silver. Whether this indicates a family relationship, or simply references that they took House Lothston's old seat, is unclear.

HOUSE MALLISTER of Seagard's lands are north of Riverrun, along the west coast of the Riverlands on Ironman's Bay and southwest of the Twins. The castle is near the headwaters of the Blue Fork of the Trident River. The Mallisters are longstanding enemies of the ironborn, as Seagard was built as a defense against marauders from the Iron Islands. House Mallister's Heraldry consists of a silver eagle on a blue field. Their house words are "Above the Rest."
