MEEREEN OF ESSOS

Meereen is the northernmost and greatest of the three great city-states of the Bay of Dragons, north of Yunkai and Astapor. It is located at the mouth of the Skahazadhan River, which flows from its origins in Lhazar through the mountains separating Meereen and the rest of Slaver's Bay from the Red Waste. The Dothraki Sea lies to the north, beyond the river. The wealthiest residents live in pyramids. People and things from Meereen are known as "Meereenese".

He belongs to the ancient aristocratic House of Loraq, who have been one of the ruling families of slavemasters in Meereen for many generations. Hizdahr is fluent in the Common Tongue of Westeros, which is not unusual for merchants in Essos, as they take part in long-distance trade.

Fennesz was a slave in the service of Master Mighdal, one of the Great Masters of Meereen, and charged with educating the children of the household. In his own opinion, he was well treated by his master and loved by the children he taught. He speaks several languages, including Valyrian and the Common Tongue, and knows the history of House Targaryen.

Go and boil your bottom, son of a silly person! I wave my private parts at your aunties! I donít want to talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food trough wiper! I blow my nose at you, so-called "Dragon Queen", you and all your silly Westerosi kaniggets!"

He is concerned about Tyrion, a stranger, negotiating in the name of Daenerys and expresses his distrust for Tyrion.

Mossador, a former slave from Meereen, attempts to convince his fellow slaves to join Daenerys Targaryen and defeat the Great Masters. He becomes the representative of Meereen's freedmen in Daenerys's small council.

Kesh is a former slave and a prominent leader among the freedmen of Meereen, who is unhappy with Tyrion negotiating for peace with the people who caused so much suffering for them.

Meereenese

Like the other major cities of the Bay of Dragons, Meereen was founded as a colony of the old Ghiscari Empire, which was later conquered by the Valyrian Freehold when it destroyed the Ghiscari Empire 5,000 years ago. Similarly to the Free Cities to the west, after the Doom of Valyria (four hundred years before the War of the Five Kings) the local slaver-cities reasserted their independence. Meereen is by far the largest of the now-independent city states, bigger than Astapor or Yunkai. At the time that Daenerys Targaryen arrives at the city, there are about three slaves in the city for each free man.

Sons of the Harpy

Sons of the Harpy

Sons of the Harpy

The Sons of the Harpy were an underground insurgency group fighting the rule of Daenerys Targaryen over Meereen, composed of former slavers. They took their name from the harpy, the traditional heraldic symbol of the slave-masters in the Ghiscari cities of Slaver's Bay, and the Ghiscari Empire before them. They concealed their identities by wearing golden masks with horned faces resembling harpies.
