EXTINCT GREAT HOUSE MARTELL OF SUNSPEAR

House Martell of Sunspear is an extinct Great House of Westeros. It ruled the peninsula of Dorne in the far south of the continent. Sunspear is the capital of Dorne, southernmost of the Seven Kingdoms, located in the far southeast of the continent on the Summer Sea. It consists of a strong, fortified castle and a town that sprawls around it. It is a town built largely of mud and straw. The town's largest structure is Spear Tower, a 150-feet structure with a pinnacle of shining steel.

Doran Martell was the Prince of Dorne and the Lord of Sunspear. He was the head of House Martell, the ruling house of Dorne, and the older brother of the late Princess Elia and Prince Oberyn. He suffered from a severe case of gout, which mostly prevented him from walking and restricted him to a wheelchair. Doran was a pensive, calculating, and patient man who always waited and observed before making his next move. Doran was raised to be more responsible as the heir to the Dornish throne. He truly cared for both his people and his family.

Prince Oberyn was the younger brother of Prince Doran Martell and Princess Elia Martell. He was nicknamed "the Red Viper" for his knowledge of poisons and for his unusual, deadly style of combat. Oberyn was known for being an accomplished warrior. He trained at the Citadel in his youth, managing to forge several links in a maester's chain, and became well versed in the use of poisons in the process. Oberyn was very close with his sister, Elia, and took her death very hard. He was also close to his older brother, Doran, despite their very different personalities.

Prince Trystane is a member of House Martell, the ruling house of Dorne. He is the eldest and only son of Doran and Prince of Dorne. Like his father Doran, Trystane lacks (for the most part) the hotheadedness typical of Dornishmen, as evidenced by his showing mercy to Bronn for attacking him. He is betrothed to Myrcella Baratheon. He was murdered along with his father by Ellaria Sand and the Sand Snakes in an act of retaliation for his father's inaction against House Lannister for their crimes against House Martell.

Though loyal to the Iron Throne, the Martells were never conquered by the Targaryens and pursued a more isolated role in wider political events since Robert's Rebellion. Their motto of the House is "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken." The castle was the seat of House Martell until the family was legally wiped out by Ellaria Sand and the three eldest Sand Snakes, who seized power through a coup. With the assassinations of Doran and his only heir, Trystane, the Sand Snakes continue to use the Martell sigil to represent themselves and Dorne.

House Blackmont is a vassal house which holds fealty to House Martell of Dorne. Their seat is the eponymous castle of Blackmont. A House Blackmont banner is seen amongst the delegation of Dornish lords who accompany Prince Oberyn Martell to King's Landing. Podrick identifies their banner by name. Lord Blackmont is the head of House Blackmont and is greeted by Master of Coin Tyrion Lannister, outside of King's Landing. The two exchange greetings, in which Lord Blackmont reveals Prince Oberyn has arrived the previous night.

House Dayne can trace its roots back to the Dawn Age. Their seat is the castle of Starfall, which is built on an island at the mouth of the Torrentine River, where the first Dayne is said to have tracked a falling star and found a magical stone. Their ancestral weapon is Dawn, a blade forged from the metal of the fallen star. The Dayne knight that bears the sword is granted the title of "the Sword of the Morning". In present-day Westeros, House Dayne is best known for their ancestral sword and the knight who wields it.

Ser Arthur Dayne was the"Sword of the Morning" knight of House Dayne. He was also a member of the Kingsguard under King Aerys II Targaryen. Ser Arthur was the second son of Beric Dayne, Lord of Starfall. He was a legendary knight and one of the finest men to have joined the Kingsguard, probably rivalled only by Ser Barristan Selmy. Ser Arthur's reputation was such that, when people remembered him, it was in acclaim. He was sent to deal with the Kingswood Brotherhood and subsequently killed the Smiling Knight in a duel.

The Tower of Joy is where the confrontation begins between Ned Stark and five of his bannermen against Ser Arthur Dayne and Ser Gerold Hightower, the last members of the Kingsguard. The fight ends with the deaths of all swordsmen save for Ned Stark and Howland Reed. Ned then enters the Tower after hearing a woman's scream from inside. It's soon revealed that the Tower of Joy is the birthplace of Jon Snow.
