House Frey was a noble house in the Riverlands that had emerged about six hundred years before the War of the Five Kings. Their seat is at The Twins, a castle consisting of two identical towers and a bridge intersecting the Green Fork of The Trident river. The Freys grew rich from exacting tolls on travelers crossing the Green Fork. For most of their history, the Freys have been vassals of House Tully, the paramount lords of the Trident since the Targaryen conquest. Hoster mockingly referred to Frey as the "Late Walder Frey"; much to Walder's chagrin.

Walder Frey was the Lord of the Crossing and the head of House Frey, a vassal family of House Tully of the Riverlands. He ruled The Twins and its surrounding lands, controlling the strategically important crossing of the Green Fork. Over the years, this great stone bridge has made House Frey a fortune in crossing fees. Lord Walder has been married seven times and is almost ninety years old. He is referred to by Hoster Tully, as the "Late Lord Frey" after delaying his arrival to assist Robert's Rebellion until the outcome had already been determined.

Lothar was one of the many sons of Walder. He was the steward of the Twins, managing the day-to-day running of the castle. He often planned and organized the fine details to achieve his father's goals. He was often referred to as "Lame Lothar" due to the pronounced limp he has in his left leg.

Arya Stark killed Lord Walder Frey along with his two most prominent sons, Lame Lothar Frey and Black Walder Rivers. Later, Arya gathers all of the lord's sons at the Twins and poisons them under the disguise of Walder Frey's face. This essentially exterminates a house that seemingly had an endless supply of heirs. Due to this state of affairs, the status as a Great House and who holds control over the Riverlands, is unknown.
