GREAT HOUSE ARRYN OF THE VALE

House Arryn of the Eyrie is one of the Great Houses of Westeros. Their lands are in the central-eastern region of the continent. Their seat is the Eyrie, ancestral seat of the Mountain Kings. It has ruled over the Vale of Arryn for millennia, originally as the Kings of Mountain and Vale and more recently as Lords Paramount of the Vale and Wardens of the East under the Targaryen kings and Baratheon-Lannister kings. Their motto is "As High As Honor".

Jon was the Lord of the Eyrie and the head of House Arryn. He was the Warden of the East and Defender of the Vale. Jon was a respected nobleman and both Eddard and Robert were fostered by him during their adolescence. He was investigating the legitimacy of the children of Cersei Lannister. Jon later died from unknown, and unexplained, causes just after discovering that the children were secretly not the biological children of Robert. He is survived by his wife Lysa and their six-year-old son, Robin Arryn.

Lysa was born into House Tully and was the second child of Lord Hoster Tully. She had an older sister, Catelyn, and a younger brother, Edmure. Lysa and Jon have a single son, Robin Arryn, whom she dotes on constantly. Lysa and Jon spent the next seventeen years in the capital of King's Landing, never returning to the Eyrie in the Vale of Arryn. Lysa fled King's Landing for the safety of the Eyrie with Robin, then six-years old. After Jon's death, she assumed rulership as the Lady Regent of the Vale until her son came of age.

The nominal head of House Arryn is Robin Arryn, the Lord of the Eyrie, with his stepfather Petyr Baelish acting as Lord Protector until he reaches the age of majority. At the start of the series, Lord Jon Arryn was killed under suspicious circumstances. His widow Lysa blamed House Lannister and sought refuge in the Eyrie. Despite her enmity towards the Lannisters, she remained neutral in the War of the Five Kings and aimed to use the forces of the Vale to defend Robin and the Eyrie if necessary.

Arryn Handmaiden

After killing Lysa and making it appear like an accident, Lord Petyr Baelish becomes Lord Protector of the Vale until young Robin comes of age. Under his rule, supervised by Baelish, the Vale assists House Stark in toppling House Bolton in the North during the Battle of the Bastards. After the battle, the Vale declares for House Stark and becomes part of the Kingdom of the North in defiance of the Iron Throne.

ARRYN MILITARY

House Arryn commanded a formidable military prior to the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings. It was able to field over 20,000 men, due to Lysa Arryn's decision to remain neutral. The Arryns are apparently well organized and well armed, as evident during the Battle of the Bastards wherein they aided the Starks in reclaiming their ancestral seat of Winterfell, defeating the Bolton phalanx with ease.

The knights of the Vale are capable of battling in the ice and snow due to the Vale's many altitudes, ranging from high to low ranges. Their house is wealthy due to trade and fertility from port-towns such as Gulltown, so the Arryn army is well-equipped compared to the Freys or the Starks. Their breastplate is silver and their shields are circular with House Arryn's sigil. Their uniforms are blue and their helmets are pointy.

House Waynwood is headed by the widowed Lady Anya Waynwood and its heraldry consists of a black broken wheel on green. Their seat is the castle of Ironoaks, east of the Eyrie on the coast of the Narrow Sea. They are known for their insistence on ceremony. The other members of House Waynwood at the time of the novels are: Ser Morton Waynwood, her eldest son and heir; Ser Donnel Waynwood, her second son, Knight of the Gate; and Wallace Waynwood, her youngest son.

House Egen from the Vale of Arryn is a noble house that boasts the motto, "By Day or Night." Their sigil is a yellow sun, white crescent moon, and silver star on blue chief above white. The only known member is Ser Vardis Egen, however in the novels, Vardis is stated as having one young son.
