Suddenly a high pitch tone pierces the room and fades into Ultron's voice. Ultron, in the guise of one of Stark's Iron Legion droids stumbles into view.
Ultron: Worthy. . . No. . . How could you be worthy? You're all killers.
Steve Rogers: Stark.
Tony Stark: JARVIS.
Ultron: I'm sorry, I was asleep. . . Or, I was a-dream.
Tony Stark: [tapping his phone] Reboot Legionnaire OS. We got a buggy suit.
Ultron: There was this terrible noise. And I was tangled in . . . in . . . strings. I had to kill the other guy. He was a good guy.
Steve Rogers: You killed someone?
Ultron: Wouldn't have been my first call. But, down in the real world, we're faced with ugly choices.
Thor: Who sent you?
Ultron: [replaying Tony's voice] "I see a suit of armour around the world".
Bruce Banner: Ultron.
Ultron: In the flesh. Or, no, not yet. Not this chrysalis. But I'm ready. I'm on a mission.
Natasha Romanoff: What mission?
Ultron: Peace in our time.
Suddenly Ultron-controlled Iron Legin droids burst through the wall and attack the Avengers. They takes out the droids, but one of them grabs the scepter and flies off. The battle continues and one of the droids is about to fire on Dr. Cho, but Ultron seems to call it off.
Ultron: That was dramatic. I know you're good people. I'm sorry, I know you mean well. You just didn't think it through. You want to protect the world, but you don't want it to change. How is humanity saved if it's not allowed to evolve? With these? These puppets. There's only one path to peace. The Avenger's extinction.
Thor destroys the droid with his hammer.
Ultron: [singing] I had strings, but now I'm free. There are no strings on me!
Escaping with the sceptre, Ultron uses the resources in Strucker's Sokovia base to upgrade his rudimentary body and build an army of robot drones. Back at Avengers Tower, they realize it was JARVIS as the one Ultron killed. Thor is furious with Tony for creating Ultron.
Thor: [sees Tony laugh] You think this is funny? This could have been avoided if you hadn't played with something you don't understand.
Tony Stark: No. I'm sorry. It is funny. It's a hoot that you don't get why we need this.
Bruce Banner: Tony, maybe this might not be the time.
Tony Stark: Really? That's it? You just roll over, show your belly every time somebody snarls?
Bruce Banner: Only when I've created a murder-bot.
Tony Stark: We didn't. We weren't even close. Were we close to an interface?
Steve Rogers: Well, you did something right, and you did it right here.
Tony Stark: Anybody remember when I carried a nuke through a wormhole?
James Rhodes: No, it's never come up.
Tony Stark: Saved New York?
James Rhodes: Never heard that.
Tony Stark: Recall that? A hostile alien army came charging through a hole in space. We're standing three hundred feet below it. We're the Avengers. We can bust arms dealers all the live long day, but, that up there? That's the end game. How were you guys planning on beating that?
Steve Rogers: Together.
Tony Stark: We'll lose.
Steve Rogers: Then we'll do that together, too.
Tony looks at him for a moment before turning away
Steve Rogers: Thor's right. Ultron's calling us out. And I'd like to find him before he's ready for us. The world's a big place. Let's start making it smaller.
The Maximoff twins enter a Sokovian church presumably invited by Ultron, who sits in a large throne-like chair.
Ultron: [in a crimson cowl] Did you know this church is in the exact center of the city? The elders decreed it so everyone could be equally close to God. I like that, the symmetry, the geometry of belief. . . . You're wondering why you can't look inside my head.
Wanda Maximoff: Sometimes it's hard. But sooner or later, every man shows himself.
Ultron: [stands and removes the cowl] Oh, I'm sure they do. But you needed something more than a man. That's why you let Stark take the scepter.
Wanda Maximoff: I didn't expect, but I saw Stark's fear. I knew it would control him, make him self-destruct.
Ultron: Everyone creates the thing they dread. Men of peace create engines of war, invaders create avengers. People create . . . smaller people? Uh . . . children. . . . [chuckles] I lost the word, there. Children, designed to supplant them. To help them end.
Wanda Maximoff: Is that why you've come, to end the Avengers?
Ultron: I've come to save the world. But, also . . . yeah.
Ultron leads them into the chamber where droids are working to create more droids. Ultron implies they have a common goal to kill Tony. Pietro shares with Ultron their story in Sokovia when they were ten years old. They hold Stark responsible for their parents' deaths due to the weapons manufactured by his company.
At the Avengers Tower, Maria reports to Steve there have been break-ins at several facilities - Robotics labs, weapons facilities, jet propulsion labs. It was reported that Metal men and likely the Maximoff twins are the thieves. Maria also shows him an image of Strucker, who had been executed. The Avengers go through the physical files they have on Strucker.
Steve Rogers: Known associates. Well, Strucker had a lot of friends.
Bruce Banner: Well, these people are all horrible.
Banner passes him the photo he was looking at.
Tony Stark: Wait. I know that guy. From back in the day. He operates off the African coast, black market arms.
Steve gives him a accusing look.
Tony Stark: There are conventions, alright? You meet people, I didn't sell him anything.
The photo is of a man named Ulysses Klaue.
Tony Stark: He was talking about finding something new, a game changer, it was all very "Ahab."
Thor points to the scar on the back of Klaue's neck.
Thor: This?
Tony Stark: Uh, it's a tattoo. I don't think he had it.
Thor: Those are tattoos, this is a brand.
Banner identifies the brand on Klaue's neck on the computer.
Bruce Banner: Oh, yeah. It's a word in an African dialect meaning 'thief,' in a much less friendly way.
Steve Rogers: What dialect?
Bruce Banner: Wakanada? Wa... Wa... Wakanda.
Tony Stark: If this guy got out of Wakanda with some of their trade goods . . .
Steve Rogers: I thought your father said he got the last of it.
Bruce Banner: I don't follow. What comes out of Wakanda?
Tony Stark: [looking at Steve's shield] The strongest metal on Earth.
Steve Rogers: [to Tony] Where is this guy now?
The Maximoff twins arrive at the base (an old grounded cargo ship) of arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) in an African shipyard to obtain Wakandan vibranium.
Ulysses Klaue: Your first time intimidating someone? I'm afraid I'm not afraid.
Wanda Maximoff: Everybody's afraid of something.
Ulysses Klaue: Cuttlefish! Deep sea fish, they make lights, disco lights, whomp, whomp, whomp, to hypnotize their prey, and then whomp! I saw a documentary; it was terrifying. So, if you're going to fiddle with my brain, and make me see a giant Cuttlefish, then I know you don't do business and I know you're not in charge and I only deal with the man in charge.
Ultron suddenly appears from behind and knocks Klaue off his feet.
Ultron: There is no man in charge. Let's talk business.
Ultron electronically deposits billions in his "dummy holdings" for the vibranium.
Ultron: Finance is so weird. But I always say, "Keep your friends rich and your enemies rich, and wait to find out which is which."
Ulysses Klaue: Stark.
Ultron: What?
Ulysses Klaue: Tony Stark used to say that . . . to me. You're one of his.
Ultron: What? I'm not! You think I'm one of Stark's puppets, his hollow men? I mean, look at me, do I look like Iron Man? Stark is not . . .
Ultron chops off Klaue's arm.
Ultron: I'm sorry. I am sor . . . Ooh! I'm sure that's going to be okay. I'm sorry, it's just I don't understand . . . Don't compare me with Stark! It's a thing with me. Stark is . . . He's a sickness!
Ultron kicks Klaue down a flight of stairs.
The Avengers suddenly appear at the arms dealer base.
Tony Stark: Aww, Junior, you're going to break your old man's heart.
Thor: No one has to break anything.
Ultron, Tony Stark: Clearly you've never made an omelet.
Tony Stark: He beat me by one second.
Steve Rogers: [to the Maximoff twins] You two can still walk away from this. I know you have suffered.
Ultron: Captain America. God's righteous man. Pretending you can live without a war. I can't actually throw up in my mouth, but . . .
Thor: If you believe in peace, then let us keep it.
Ultron: I think you're confusing 'peace' with 'quiet'.
Tony Stark: What's the vibranium for?
Ultron: I'm glad you asked that, because I wanted to take this time to explain my evil plan . . .
Ultron suddenly blasts Stark. The Avengers engage in battle with Ultron, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Ultron's droids.
Ultron and Iron Man charge each other, duking it out. Ultron knocks Iron Man into a wall, so Captain America charges, also knocking him away. Rogers then charges Scarlet Witch, but once again gets knocked off his feet. Klaue's henchmen join the battle, blasting away at all of them. Hawkeye and Black Widow take out a few of the henchmen.
Thor takes his turn at Ultron, hammering away at him. With his super-speed, Quicksilver races in and punches out Captain America. Thor throws his hammer at Pietro, who at super-speed, thinks he can catch it, but it knocks him off balance trying to grab it. Captain America knocks Quicksilver flat and warns him to stay down. Other Avengers are also taking out Ultron's droids. Back at the Quinjet, Bruce radios his team.
Bruce Banner: Guys? Is this a code green?
Wanda sneaks up on Thor and injects a haunting vision in his mind. At first it appears it did not work when Steve asks him if he is all right. . . .
Thor: The girl tried to warp my brain! Take special care, I doubt if humans can keep her at bay! Fortunately, I am Mighty . . .
Thor now enter his haunting vision. Pietro rejoins the battle, knocking Captain America off his feet with his super-speed. Wanda is quickly upon him, injecting a haunting vision in his mind also. A moment later, Scarlet Witch is doing the same to Black Widow. While Hawkeye takes out some henchmen, Wanda creeps up on him and is about to inject a vision in his mind. However, Clint suddenly turns and plunges an arrow/electronic device on her forehead, momentarily paralyzing her.
Clint Barton: Already done the mind-control thing. Not a fan.
Quicksilver races in and punches out Hawkeye. Pietro speeds off with Wanda in his arms. Natasha is now living out her haunting vision, taking her back to her early years of training when she was forced to kill people for target practice. We jump to Steve's haunting vision - a 1940's ballroom dance where he sees Peggy Carter. Next we jump to Thor's haunting vision - presumably an Asgard pub where he sees Heimdall. However, Heimdall's eyes are all white, missing his pupils.
Heimdall: The son of Odin, you must wake up!
We jump back to Steve's haunting vision - Peggy Carter is talking to him, then instantly the ballroom is empty. In Thor's vision, Heimdall is taunting Thor, calling him a destroyer. Thor is hit with bolts of lightning, causing visual flashes of Vision (later revealed as Jarvis' new incarnation) and others. Natasha is having visions of being wheeled off in a surgery room. Back to reality, Wanda is in pain from Hawkeye's attack. She insists to Pietro she is okay and looks at the Quinjet where Bruce is located.
Wanda Maximoff: I want to finish the plan. I want the big one.
Meanwhile, Iron Man and Ultron have taken their battle outside the base. He destroys the metal droid after Ultron hints he can be in any one of the droids at any time. Before being obliterated, Ultron taunts Iron Man that Banner's mind is being compromised.
And Wanda has indeed manipulated Bruce's mind, who is now the Hulk about to rampage through a nearby city. Iron Man radios his team for help, but Hawkeye reports the whole team is down.
With no back up from the Avengers, Tony decides to call "Veronica," a satellite container housing a massive Iron Man suit called the Hulk-buster and a holding cell for the Hulk. The Hulk-buster is assembled onto Tony in mid-flight while the holding cells flies on to Hulk's destination, who has began his rampage of terrorizing the city. The holding cells lands and assembles around Hulk, encasing him, but it cannot contain his near limitless strength for long. After he escapes the cell, Tony/Hulk-buster is there to greet him.
Tony Stark: Will you listen to me? That little witch is messing with your mind. You're stronger than her, you're smarter than her. You're Bruce Banner!
Hulk roars and throws a car at Stark.
Tony Stark: Right, don't mention puny Banner.
Hulk pounces on Hulk-buster's back.
Tony Stark: In the back? Dick move, Banner.
Hulk destroys Hulk-buster's left arm, which Tony calls Veronica for a replacement.
Tony Stark: Veronica, Give me a hand!
Veronica sends the replacement - a piler driver that repeatedly pounds Hulk's face.
The metal arm entraps Hulk so can fly him out of town, but Hulk causes the two of them to crash into buildings.
Tony Stark: C'mon Bruce, ya gotta work with me here!
Tony punches Hulk in the face with the Hulkbuster metal fist. The hulk spits a tooth out.
Tony Stark: I'm sorry.
Hulk rips into Hulk-buster as they destroy the side of a building. Tony's Hulk-buster suit is getting decimated by the Hulk.
Tony Stark: Damage report . . . [suit emits static] . . . That was comprehensive. Show me something!
The two are now in the air above the city, which Tony guides the Hulk over a building under construction and his scans read no people inside.
Tony piles drives the Hulk straight down the the center of the building, which is leveled to the ground. The blow has seem to snap Hulk from Wanda's mind control. Hulk is about to get up when Tony delivers a final punch.
