Luke Skywalker has vanished. In his absence, the sinister First Order has risen from the ashes of the Empire and will not rest until Skywalker, the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

The First Order is landing stormtroopers to attack a small village. A rolling droid called BB-8 notices the stormtrooper ships swooping in.
Poe Dameron meets with Lor San Tekka in a hut. Poe is given a small bag with contents of great importance.
Lor San Tekka: This will begin to make things right. I've traveled too far and seen too much to ignore the despair in the galaxy. Without the Jedi, there can be no balance in the Force.
Poe Dameron: Well, because of you, now we have a chance. The General's been after this for a long time.
Lor San Tekka: Oh, the General? To me, she is royalty.
Poe Dameron: Well, she certainly is that.
BB-8 bursts in the hut and alerts Poe of the stormtrooper ships. The stormtroopers attack while the villagers mount a defense, but they are overwhelmed. Lor San Tekka instructs Poe to leave.
Poe's X-Wing is damaged so that he cannot escape, so the pilot puts the contents, now revealed as a small electronic device, in BB-8 and orders him to escape. Poe joins the villagers in battling the stormtroopers. One of the stormtroopers seems disoriented and reluctant to participate in the slaughter. The reluctant stormtrooper scampers about, appearing to be horrified by the carnage.
At that moment a large winged ship lands, a dark figure exits the ramp. Kylo Ren wears a black mask and uses a red, fiery lightsaber. By now, most of the villagers have been captured, including Lor San Tekka. Kylo confronts Tekka.
Kylo Ren: Look how old you've become.
Lor San Tekka: Something far worse has happened to you.
Kylo Ren: You know what I've come for.
Lor San Tekka: I know where you come from, before you called yourself "Kylo Ren".
Kylo Ren: The map to Skywalker. We know you found it. And now you're going to give it to the First Order.
Lor San Tekka: The First Order rose from the Dark Side. You did not.
Kylo Ren: I'll show you the Dark Side.
Lor San Tekka: You may try. But you cannot the truth that is your family.
Kylo Ren: You're so right.
Lor San Tekka refuses to cooperate, so Kylo kills Tekka.
Poe fires at Kylo Ren, who uses the Force to block a blaster bolt. Poe is captured and brought to Kylo Ren who kneels down and stares.
Poe Dameron: ...Do I talk first or you talk first? I talk first?
Kylo presses Poe for the map, but Poe also refuses to cooperate, so they haul him to a stormshipper ship for further questioning. Kylo Ren orders the stormtroopers to destroy Lor San Tekka's entire village. Captain Phasma, a stormtrooper wearing chrome-plated armor, orders the stormtroopers to fire.
They massacre the prisoners, but the reluctant stormtrooper refuses to fire. Kylo notices the reluctant stormtrooper before returning to his ship. Meanwhile BB-8 rolls away across the sands, narrowly escaping capture.
All the ships return to the massive Star Destroyer in orbit. Captain Phasma confronts the reluctant stormtrooper, revealed as FN-2187, ordering him to take his blaster in for inspection and report to her division immediately.
We cut to Rey, a young scavenger who is barely surviving on Jakku. Rey scavenges parts from old wrecks of Star Destroyers on the sands of Jakku.
She exchanges them for food at Unkar Plutt's scrap yard. The marks on the walls of her hut indicate she's been on Jakku for a very long time.
BB-8 is discovered by Rey and she rescues the droid from a Teedo scavenger. She can understand his beeps and whistles, and offers him shelter for the night.
Rey: Where do you come from?
BB-8 beeps.
Rey: Classified, really? Me too. Big secret.
In the star destroyer, Poe is unsuccessfully interrogated by the First Order. Kylo Ren is called in to use his Force powers to extract information.
Kylo Ren: I had no idea we had the best pilot in the Resistance on board. Comfortable?
Poe Dameron: [strapped in an interrogation chair] Not really.
Kylo Ren: I'm impressed. No one has been able to get out of you what you did with the map.
Poe Dameron: You might want to rethink your technique.
Poe resists Kylo's mind probing, but ultimately divulges that the map is still on Jakku in his BB-8 unit. He leaves it to General Hux to recover the droid.
On Jakku, Rey is back at Unkar Plutt's scrap yard to exchange more items for rations. Unkar offers Rey a huge amount of rations in exchange for BB-8, she is tempted but turns down the offer. After she leaves, Unkar uses a mobile device to instruct someone to get the droid.
FN-2187 decides to run away and he needs a pilot to escape the star destroyer. So he lies to the stormtrooper guarding Poe that Kylo wants the prisoner and FN-2187 is there to escort him. FN-2187 guides Poe to a private room.
Finn: Finn: Can you fly a TIE Fighter?
Poe Dameron: I can fly anything.
FN-2187 reveals his plan to Poe.
Poe Dameron: Wha- why? Why are you helping me?
Finn: Because it's the right thing to do.
Poe Dameron: You need a pilot.
Finn: [chagrined] I need a pilot.
Finn escorts Poe to the dock filled with First Order Tie Fighters.
Finn: Okay. Stay calm. Stay calm.
Poe Dameron: I am calm.
Finn: I'm talking to myself.
The two board a black TIE fighter to escape.
Poe Dameron: I've always wanted to fly one of these things. Can you shoot?
Finn: Blasters, I can.
Poe Dameron: Okay, same principle. Use the toggle on the left to switch between missiles, cannons, and mag pulse. Use the sight on the right to aim, triggers to fire.
Finn: This is very complicated.
After a struggle to disconnect the TIE fighter and a battle with armed stormtroopers, they manage to escape.
Poe Dameron: What's your name?
Finn: FN-2187. That's the only name they ever gave me.
Poe Dameron: Well, I'm not going to call you that. Let's see... FN... I'm going to call you Finn. How about that?
Finn: Yeah, Finn. I like that.
Poe expertly pilots while Finn fires the ship's blasters.
On the bridge of the Star Destroyer, General Hux learns that the escapees took out their turbolazers, so he orders the crew to activate the ventral cannons. Kylo enters the bridge and realizes it was Finn that helped Poe escape.
Finn is upset when Poe reveals he plans to land on Jakku.
Finn: Where are we going?
Poe Dameron: We're going back to Jakku. That's where.
Finn: No, no, no. We can't go back to Jakku. We need to get out of this system.
Poe Dameron: I gotta get my droid before the First Order does.
Finn: What, a droid?
Poe Dameron: That's right. He's a BB unit, orange and white. One of a kind.
Finn: I don't care what color he is! No droid can be that important.
Poe Dameron: This one is, pal!
Finn: We gotta get as far away from the First Order as we can. We go back to Jakku, we die.
Poe Dameron: That droid has a map that leads straight to Luke Skywalker.
Finn: Oh, you gotta be kidding me!
General Hux is studying Finn's profile when Captain Phasma informs him that Finn was sent to re-conditioning and this was his first offense. At that moment, the crew inform Hux that the escaped Tie fighter has been hit and heading for the Goazan badlands of Jakku. Hux orders a squad to the wreckage.
The fighter was hit by the star destroyer's ventral cannons and crash lands on Jakku. Finn has ejected but it appears Poe has gone down with the ship leaving only his jacket.
General Hux: Supreme Leader Snoke was explicit. Capture the droid if we can, but destroy it if we must.
Kylo Ren: How capable are your soldiers, General?
General Hux: I won't have you question my methods.
Kylo Ren: They're obviously skilled at committing high treason. Perhaps Leader Snoke should consider using a clone army.
General Hux: My men are exceptionally trained. Programmed from birth.
Kylo Ren: Then they should have no problem retrieving the droid. Unharmed.
General Hux: Careful, Ren, that your personal interests not interfere with orders from Leader Snoke.
Kylo Ren: I want that map. For your sake... I suggest you get it.
