FADE IN: EXT. EARTH - DAY (12,000 B.C.)

The world turns below us, vast and slow. A RUMBLE. A shadow sweeps over the land. We move with the shadow. We cast the shadow. Landscapes slide by. Reduced by altitude to abstractions: river deltas, forests and flood plains.

A raw natural world. No trace of civilization. The shadow glides over mountains and glaciers. Across an ocean and a pale beach. Over lowland plain at the foot of a . . . . continue

The Common Sense (or lack of)
of Prometheus' Scientists

Movie forums are raging on the poor decisions made by the Prometheus' scientists, even for many months after the film's release.

While the stupidity of the Prometheus scientists didn't have me in an uproar like some I've seen in a number of movie forums, I have to wonder why the studio signed off on this.

Scientists portrayed in film as bumbling dimwits has always been a sore spot for film viewers, you would think the movie industry would have kept that as a standing rule to not violate.

However, for anyone to think stupidity is absent in our history of scientific discovery and research, is just being naive. So the film's science oafs were not exactly a gross misrepresentation of the real world scientific community. A number of diseases leashed on society are the result of bumbling scientific research (there was actually a percentage stat I had read on that, but I can't find the link).

But the most convincing proof that half-wit scientists/research not only existed in the fictional Prometheus universe, stupidity is present in real world scientific research at an alarming level. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists Board didn't just arbitrarily add Life Sciences to the Doomsday Clock as one of the possible demises of civilization, there was a good reason for it.
