Max Rockatansky is trekking through post-apocalyptic Australia.
Max: [narrating] My name is Max. My world is fire. And blood. Once, I was a cop. A road warrior searching for a righteous cause. As the world fell, each of us in our own way was broken. It was hard to know who was more crazy . . . me . . . or everyone else.
As he stands on a ridge looking around, a two-headed lizard crawls near Max and he stomps on it before eating it. His haunting visions of the dead he had failed to save - his wife, child, and other people, continue.
Max: [narrating] Here they come again, worming their way into the black matter of my brain. I tell myself they cannot touch me. They are long dead.
He drives off and is quickly pursued by a group of scavengers called the War Boys, who are all pale and covered in blisters due to radiation sickness. They chase Max through the desert and cause him to crash before they capture him.
Max: [narrating] I am the one that runs from both the living and the dead. Hunted by scavengers, haunted by those I could not protect. So I exist in this wasteland. A man reduced to a single instinct: survive.
The War Boys take Max to their lair in the Citadel, a system of caves in a very tall mesa. They shave his head and face.
They tattoo his back with a notice saying he is a universal blood donor (Type O negative) because they intend to use him as a blood supply. They cover the lower part of his face with a trident-shaped iron muzzle.
Max is nearly branded with an image of a skull engulfed in fire but he breaks free and runs from the War Boys.
The chase through the caves shows that the Citadel is extensive and has an ample water supply.
As he runs, Max continues to see visions of the dead before he makes it to an exit high above the ground.
He jumps out and latches onto a swinging hook, but he keeps swinging back toward the War Boys and they manage to pull him back into the tunnel.
In the Citadel, there is a large community of survivors ruled by the leader of the War Boys, Immortan Joe.
Joe wears a grotesque face mask made of horse teeth set in a large pair of jaws.
There are air hoses attached to a bellows system on his back to help him breathe (his lungs are damaged).
As he addresses a crowd on the ground below the Citadel, he supplies the people with some water.
Joe: I am your redeemer. It is by my hand you will rise from the ashes of this world.
Everyone goes crazy and fight for it once Joe shuts it off after a few seconds.
Joe: Do not, my friends, become addicted to water. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence!
Joe then sends his commander Imperator Furiosa out in a huge war rig to collect fuel from Gas Town. Furiosa has a metal prosthesis in place of her lower left arm and hand. A War Boy known as The Ace and other War Boys stationed on the War Rig along with a few smaller vehicles, are assigned as her bodyguards.
On the road, Furiosa diverts from the path to Gas Town (glimpsed as a distant group of oil refineries) and heads east. Joe's deformed son, Corpus Colossus, has been monitoring her movement through a telescope.
Corpus: Hey pa - you know about this?
Joe and Rictus Erectus walk over to him.
Corpus: Your produce ain't going to Gas Town. She's gone off-road, into hostile territory.
Joe looks through the telescope, then runs off, agitated.
Rictus: Why would she do that, Dad?
Rictus is trying to look through Corpus' telescope.
Rictus: Lemme see! Lemme see!
Corpus: Rictus!
Rictus: I wanna see!
Corpus: Rictus. Go see what's agitating Dad!
Joe runs to the locked chambers where he keeps his five wives (young women chosen to breed his children). They're all gone, and writing on the walls and floor state "Our babies will not be warlords" and "Who killed the world?"
An old woman, Miss Giddy, is holding Immortan Joe at gunpoint with a shotgun.
Miss Giddy: They are not your property!
Joe: Miss Giddy!
Miss Giddy: You cannot own a human being! Sooner or later, someone pushes back!
Joe: Where is she taking them!?!
Miss Giddy: She didn't take them, they begged her to go!
Joe disarms her and grabs Miss Giddy
Joe: Where is she taking them?
Miss Giddy: A long way from you!
Immortan Joe drags Miss Giddy with him.
Furiosa's betrayal prompts Joe to rally the War Boys to go after her. All the War Boys are eager to join the chase. The War Boys believe that Immortan Joe can deliver them to the gates of Valhalla.
But one of the War Boys called Nux is so weak that he needs a "blood bag."
The blood being pumped into Nux is coming from Max, who is strung up like an I.V.
Through persistence and willing to risk death, Nux fights for the right to join the chase, which means Max goes along for the ride, chained to Nux and connected to the driver via a central line transfusion tube.
Nux: If I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die historic on the Fury Road!
