Lance: Hmm. . . Well, if I was gonna haunt anybody, this would certainly be the house I'd do it in.

Suddenly the door slams shuts and the chandelier starts swinging.

Nora, the proverbial ‘hysterical’ woman and star screamer of the story, asks . . .

Nora: Who closed the door?

While the chandelier continues tinkling, Lance checks the door to find it is locked now.

Lance: This thing's made of solid steel.

Lance looks up and darts for Nora to pull her away as the chandelier comes crashing down.

Up on a balcony, Frederick watches the perilous moment and then walks away with a smile. He enters Annabelle's (Carol Ohmart) room, his fourth wife. Behind the couple's motivations is a hostile and cunning strategy to destroy each other while manipulating their unwitting guests.

Frederick: Annabelle? Our guests are here, and unfortunately, still alive. Is your face on yet?

Annabelle (exits bathroom): Dust and dirt everywhere, and the water barely trickles. Couln't you have had the place cleaned?

Frederick: Atmosphere, darling. You know how ghost are. They never tidy up. . . That's a very fetching outfit, but hardly suitable for a party.

Annabelle: I'm not going to the party.

Frederick: This spend-the-night ghost party was you idea, remember? Since it's gonna cost me $50,000, I want you to have fun.

Annabelle: The party was my idea until you invited all the guests. Why all these strangers? Why none of our friends?

Frederick: Friends? Do we have any friends?

Annabelle: No. Your jealousy took care of that.

Frederick: I had a reason for inviting each guest. I wanted kind of a cross section, from psychiatrist to typist, and from drunk to jet pilot. They share one thing. They all need money. Now let's see if they're brave enough to earn it.

Annabelle: And you call this a party?

Frederick: Could be.

Frederick picks up the champagne bottle and shakes it.

Annabelle: Why do you always do that. It spoils the champagne.

Frederick: It might explode.

Annabelle: Never does.

Frederick: Will you guarantee that?

He points the bottle cork at her.

Annabelle: That isn't funny, Frederick

Frederick: Make a good headline. 'Playboy kills wife with champagne cork.' Will you join me?

Annabelle: No, thank you.

Frederick: Just a sip? Might improve your humor.

Annabelle: My humor is fine, thanks, and I haven't poisoned it.

Frederick: It's always good to know that. Have some. You'll enjoy the party more. Go on.

Annabelle (sips champagne): Your trust is so touching, and I'm not going to the party.

Frederick: Of all my wifes, you're the least agreeable.

Annabelle: But still alive.

Frederick: Hmm. Would you go away for a million dollars tax-free? . . . You want it all, don't you?

Annabelle: I deserve it all. Your jealousy isn't tax-free, and your possessiveness is maddening.

Frederick: If ever a man had grounds for divorce . . .

Annabelle: But can't prove them.

Frederick: The time will come. You'll slip up one of these days.

Annabelle: Think so?

Frederick: If I live long enough. You remember the fun we had when you poisoned me?

Annabelle: Ha ha ha. Something you ate, the doctor said.

Frederick: Yes, arsenic on the rocks. Annabelle, you'd do it again if you thought you could get away with it, wouldn't you?

Annabelle: Darling, what makes you think that?

Frederick: Something about you. I hear that hanging is very uncomfortable, in case you get any more ideas. Don't let the ghosts and ghouls disturb you, darling.

Annabelle: Darling, the only ghoul in the house is you.

Frederick: And don't sit up all night thinking of ways to get rid of me. It makes wrinkles.

Frederick leaves to join the guests.
