From The Art of Avatar: James Cameron's Epic Adventure Book: With the lightness of a dandelion seed and the subtle movement of a pulsating jellyfish, the Woodsprites are designed to float along in bands of hundreds in and through the Pandoran air.

Woodsprites

See those delicate floating Earth-like dandelions? Those are WOODSPRITES.

Woodsprite (Na'vi name: Atokirina') is a seed of the Tree of Souls that lives on Pandora. These seeds, according to the Na'vi, are considered very pure and sacred spirits. The Omaticaya Clan ritually plants one of these seeds with the body of a deceased Na'vi. Furthermore these seeds are believed to be auspicious wheresoever they choose to rest.

The seeds are similar in appearance to small deep-sea jellyfish, but they float on the wind like dandelion seeds, possibly aided in this by the denser atmosphere on Pandora. When a Na'vi dies, Woodsprites are often placed in the grave, so that the Na'vi's consciousness will become part of Eywa.

Excerpts from the 2007 script:

"RACK FOCUS to the tip of the arrow -- where a single WOODSPRITE floats down to land on the arrow-head.Like a dandelion seed, but larger, the WOODSPRITE waves its silky CILIA, feather light, as it balances on the deadly point. It glows faintly in the dark shadows. NEYTIRI frowns, puzzled, and LOWERS her bow slowly. The woodsprite WHIRLS away into the gloom."

"The WOODSPRITES, PULSING with purpose, float right towards Jake. They dance gently around his shoulders and head. More woodsprites gather around him. Several ALIGHT on him. Jake holds still, knowing he should be afraid -- but somehow he’s not. He spreads his arms. More sprites come, landing all over his arms, hands, body. Now a pulsing, glowing, fluttering MASS OF LIGHT -- moves one of Jake's hand slowly, not wanting to break the spell. He studies one of the sprites dancing on his palm until -- WHOOSSHH! the woodsprites whirl up and away, scattering into the darkness."
